From Scarcity to Abundance: Healing Financial Traumas and Embracing Wealth
I used to think that success was the ultimate key to happiness. That if I could just earn more, achieve more, and prove my worth, I would finally feel… enough.
But here’s the truth no one told me:
You can climb every ladder, hit every milestone, and still feel empty. And that’s exactly what happened to me.
The Invisible Wounds That Shaped My Money Story
Growing up as the eldest daughter in a modest Indonesian family came with its silent contracts — be responsible, be the example, and above all, don’t fail. From a young age, I internalized the belief that love and acceptance had conditions: I had to excel, I had to be strong, I had to make everyone proud.
Success became my survival mechanism. Every scholarship, every award, every promotion wasn’t just an achievement — it was a lifeline to validation.
But here’s the thing about external validation: it’s like pouring water into a bottomless cup. No matter how much you pour, it’s never full.
Even after moving to Japan in my twenties — living what many would call the “dream life” — I felt trapped. I had the career. I was independent. But deep inside, a quiet, persistent emptiness gnawed at me.
I was terrified of losing money.
Terrified of failing.
Terrified of… not being enough.
Money, for me, wasn’t just currency — it was proof of my worth.
I still remember the pit in my stomach whenever I checked my bank account.
I was doing everything right — I had the degrees, the promotions, the financial independence. On the outside, I looked like someone who had “made it.”
But inside? I felt trapped.
No matter how much I earned, I was terrified of losing it all. Every decision — whether investing in myself, taking time off, or even buying something small — felt like a risk.
I didn’t realize it then, but I was stuck in a scarcity loop, living with unhealed money wounds that kept me in fear.
And I see this same pattern in high-achieving women every day — women who’ve done everything “right” yet still feel financial security remains just out of reach.
If this resonates with you, keep reading.
Because I found a way out. And so can you.
Understanding Money Wounds and Their Impact
I see this all the time now with my clients — especially high-achieving women. We think we have a money problem, but really, we have a self-worth problem.
My relationship with money was rooted in fear:
- Fear of losing it.
- Fear of not having enough.
- Fear that if I failed financially, I failed as a person.
This fear kept me stuck in scarcity. No matter how much I earned, it never felt safe. I couldn’t take financial risks. I hesitated to invest in myself. And I secretly resented money because it felt like it controlled me.
I was living with what Ken Honda calls a “low Money EQ” — where money isn’t seen as a friend, but as a source of anxiety.
I came to realization that here’s the problem:
When your worth is tied to external success, no amount of money will ever feel enough.
So even as I built a successful career and moved to Japan, I carried that deep-rooted fear of not having enough.
💰 I hoarded money out of fear, not freedom.
💰 I avoided financial risks, even when they could benefit me.
💰 I silently resented money because it felt like it controlled me.
And I’m not alone. Studies show that financial trauma, especially from childhood, deeply impacts how we manage money as adults. As Ken Honda, author of Happy Money, teaches that a healthy money mindset isn’t about how much you make — it’s about how you feel about money. He emphasizes gratitude as a tool for attracting abundance, a concept echoed in many modern financial approaches (Happy State Bank).
But here’s the truth: You don’t just have a money problem — you have a money relationship problem.
And relationships can be healed.
The Shift: Healing My Money Wounds
The shift didn’t happen overnight. It began when I realized something simple, yet profound:
Money doesn’t flow where there’s fear. It flows where there’s trust.
So, I started doing the inner work.
1. I Faced My Money Fears Head-On
Instead of avoiding my finances, I began checking in with my money daily — this time from a place of curiosity, not anxiety.
2. I Became Present with Money.
Instead of avoiding my bank account or spiraling into panic about future expenses, I started checking in with my money regularly — but from a place of neutrality, not fear.
3. I Began Appreciating Money, No Matter How Little.
Every coffee, every bill paid, every small income — I sent gratitude its way. Gratitude, I learned, raises your vibration and invites more abundance.
4. I Stopped Complaining about Money.
Every time I complained — “Ugh, why is everything so expensive?” — I was reinforcing lack. I transformed my words:
✔ Instead of: “I can’t afford this.”
✔ I said: “How can I make this possible?”
Words carry energy, and research shows that a positive money mindset directly influences financial success (Forbes).
5. I Listened to My Intuition Over Fear.
Opportunities started showing up — sometimes in unexpected ways. And instead of overthinking or doubting, I started saying yes more often, even when it felt a little scary.
6. And most importantly, I practiced letting go of the outcome.
This was the hardest part. As a recovering control freak, I wanted guarantees. But true abundance flows when you’re detached. I started treating money like a friend who comes and goes freely — not someone I needed to trap or chase. Instead of obsessing over every dollar, I experimented with small acts of generosity.
At first, it felt uncomfortable. But then something incredible happened — money started flowing back to me in unexpected ways.
It was as if, by loosening my grip, money felt safe to return.
Living Like a Monk, Loving Like a Queen
One of the most radical shifts Ken Honda teaches is the idea of non-attachment.
It doesn’t mean you don’t care about money — it means you stop letting it control your emotions. You trust that it’s always in motion. It comes, it goes, and it returns — when you let it.
I started playing with this idea. Letting go of small amounts of money without fear. Tipping more generously. Investing in things that brought me joy without obsessing over ROI.
At first, it felt uncomfortable. But then something wild happened:
Money kept coming back.
And not always in the ways I expected.
It was as if money could feel my new energy — my openness, my trust — and it responded in kind.
The Truth About Scarcity: It’s Not About the Numbers
Most of us grew up with some version of, “Money doesn’t grow on trees” or “You have to work hard for every penny.”
But what if that’s not the full story?
What if your relationship with money is less about hustle and more about energy?
Here’s what I know now:
- You don’t need to change how much you earn to change how abundant you feel.
- You don’t need to control every dollar to feel financially safe.
- You can start trusting money, even if you’re still paying off debt.
Because abundance isn’t a number. It’s an energy. And when you trust money — even just 10% more — it starts trusting you back.
Your Invitation: Healing Your Money Story
If you’re reading this and thinking, “But Fristy, I still feel scared around money,” — I see you. I was you.
Start small.
- Practice gratitude for the money you do have.
- Notice your language — are you cursing or blessing your abundance?
- Take one small risk that says, “I trust that more is coming.”
And most of all — receive with joy. Spend with joy.
Because money isn’t meant to be hoarded. It’s meant to flow.
You don’t have to be perfect with money to be abundant.
You just have to stop seeing it as the enemy and start treating it as a trusted friend.
